A Volkswagen Story

Everyone in my cohort has a Volkswagen story.

Our Family migrated out of L.A. in a pair of turquoise Volkswagens when I was 12. My high school Frenemy, Diane Melvin Cummings, used to traumatize us with her harrowing, high-speed tailgating. And my mother hydroplaned one on Last Chance Grade- a curvy piece of Highway 101 in California with a 400 foot drop to the Pacific- where fortunately she managed to hit the mountainside instead of taking flight.

I love painting mechanical things, helicopters, bridges, water towers. So when I saw an old VW being overgrown with small white flowers my mind took a snapshot, and I Painted Green VW from that inspiration.

And Green VW made it into The Ogden.

She was met with enthusiasm when debuted at Ariodante, and the curator, Laurie Reed, asked for more. And that is how the Nine Volkswagens came to be.

Check them out- and see if you don’t feel just a little nostalgic.
